Hace poco cayó en mis manos el libro "Instrumentos científicos del Observatorio de San Fernando (siglos XVIII, XIX y XX)", editado por el Ministerio de Defensa en 1995, escrito por Francisco González González, bibliotecario del Observatorio y Doctor en Historia.
Se trata de una recopilación de los instrumentos utilizados en las Observaciones Astronómicas llevadas a cabo desde el Real Observatorio de la Armada en San Fernando. Comienza con un prólogo describiendo el trabajo astronómico en el Observatorio y en las expediciones realizadas en la época.
Para cada instrumento, se detallan sus características principales, uso, expediciones o proyectos en los que se utilizó, fechas de entrada en vigor y cuándo se dieron de baja, y lo más atractivo, una fotografía.
Es muy interesante también la amplia descripción de las peripecias en las que estuvo involucrado cada uno de ellos.
Todos están distribuidos por categorías, desde pequeños teodolitos hasta telescopios, pasando por cronómetros náuticos. Esta es mi sección favorita, donde Francisco González relata cada uno de los viajes que hicieron, cuándo se deterioraron, quién fué su constructor
El autor es un gran conocedor de toda la historia del observatorio y de las expediciones llevadas a cabo en este periodo..
Es una obra básica para conocer el desarrollo de las actividades astronómicas en España en esta época
